Space Wolf objective markers are a barrel of fun! When it comes to making objective markers for Space Wolves it's surprisingly tough though. I had this dilemma after playing a few more multiple objective based games when my opponents didn't have any objective markers either. Normally this has never been a problem for me, but I was genuinely stumped as to what I could use to represent Space Wolf objective markers. While I'd been tempted to do the usual assortment of teleport homers, crates and other Imperial bits that Space Marines tend to get away with, it just didn't feel right for the sons of Russ.
The problem is that in the background the Space Wolves have never really had to claim something. It's usually only to steal it from the enemy and smash it...or just go after the enemy and smash them!
It was only when I was in my local hobby store that I saw a pack of resin barrels. After all, what else would the Space Wolves try to protect besides ale and food?
I was really pleased with my barrel objectives, then Brad called me up and said he'd got some objective markers of his own. Great minds think alike! I think he's done a better job, although he's mounted his ale barrels on bigger bases. In game terms do you measure 3" to the centre of an objective or to the base? You'd presume the base right? So this means that the size of your objective markers plays an important part in the game and can make all the different between a win, loss or draw. Of course there's nothing wrong in using a bigger or smaller base in order to give yourself a tactical advantage. Although bigger bases make it harder to place multiple objectives in strong positions on the tabletop. But that's a very tactical post for another day.
So if you're stumped for your Space Wolf objective markers, simply get a pack of rustic barrels. They're cheap, in theme with the army and guaranteed for a barrel of laughs!

We here in Finland always play objectives from the centre at tournaments. This is because the BRB says that objectives are points on the battlefield, thus a point won't have a 4 inch radius :D. Great idea for the objective markers both of you. They are nice and simple in game terms, but still full of character.

I forget where i saw the picture, but a somebody made an objective marker that was a single wooden stick on a base, the fluff he was going foe was that the Wolf Priest would throw it across the battlefield and then order his Blood Claws to FETCH!

IMO base size is not an issue provided you use the same size objectives across the battlefield.
It is only an issue when Fred Blogs says he wants to use his objective(s) and its on a 60mm base whilst yours are on 25mm.

Heh. I've used a barrel for my Wolves since Cities Of Death, when I used it as a Field Medicae centre. After all, what's any Son Of Russ worthy of the name going to do when he's injured?
25mm base, bit of sand, barrel from WFB giant kit, and a couple of wolf tails. Job done :)

Great idea. I'm going to have to "borrow" it.

I bought two boxes of resin barrels for just this purpose too. The Barrels are in various sizes which will look good and even have a couple of Keg Stands. I'll be Wolfing mine up a bit more.

I love the objective markers. I have been trying to come up with some objective markers myself and have really been struggling. I was thinking about trying to build objective markers that had a story to them. For example right now i am trying to decide between objective markers built around the idea of my company being on a great hunt and looking for clues to Russ's whereabouts, or else objective markers that are from the loss of the wolf of Fenris. Baisically the idea would be that they are trying to chase down the Wolf of Fenris and take it back from Huron and the Red Corsairs. What does everyone think of those ideas?
